Located 5 km southeast of Porrentruy at an altitude of 488 m, COURGENAY is one of the oldest villages in the region. Public records mention the name Courgenay as far back as 1139. Its name then was Corgennard, and in 1254, Corgenay. Its fortunes varied over the centuries before it became a semi-urban agglomeration destined to play an important role in the regional economy.
AGRICULTURE: 960 hectares of arable and pasture land, producing cereals, fodder beet, potatoes and milk.
The main activities are concentrated in the watchmaking, screw-cutting, cutting and mechanical sectors (18-hectare regional industrial zone close to the N16, with direct access to the rail network, and 6-hectare communal artisanal zone 200 meters from the N16 interchange).
CURIOSITIES :
With sites such as LA COMBE VALENTIN, LA PINÈDE and L'ÉTANG DE LA CREULE, Courgenay- is a mecca for flora in Ajoie. Threatened by intensive farming and encroachment, these sites are now partly protected and are home to almost 500 different plant species. The municipality is also 40% forested, and has a full-time forestry team to look after it.
